Excellence is ...Riley Hospital for Children is considered among the best children's hospitals in the country because it embraces excellence - in caring for young patients, excellence in innovative research and excellence in training the next generation of health care providers. So often in my work here I'm reminded that excellence pushes beyond a label. Recently, one of my Riley colleagues - a doctor considered to be among the foremost worldwide authorities in his field - shared an experience from a speaking engagement. During a break, a young man approached and introduced himself. The older man, seeing the young man, clearly recognized him but drawing a blank, apologized and asked how they knew one another. The younger man's face lit up, "Doctors told my parents there was nothing they could do for me. But when we came to Riley, you invited me to be part of a research trial - you changed my life." Today that young man is a medical student, studying to perpetuate the legacy started by his Riley physician. This story brought to mind how often I hear anecdotes that demonstrate that spirit of excellence ever present at Riley. Excellence is the knowledge that allows an oncologist to assure a family that their child does not have cancer. Excellence is offering a patient who needs a tonsillectomy the same quality of care as one requiring a heart transplant. Excellence is finding a breakthrough therapy that retrains a particular type of cancer cell, or hearing a child tell you she wants to be a doctor when she grows up. These examples, and countless others, contribute to making Riley a nationally renowned center for excellence in pediatric medicine. Here, excellence is not a destination. It is not a trophy to defend; rather one to behold. It is not a nameplate on a door; instead, it's the tradition of refusing to accept the status quo. At Riley Hospital for Children, excellence is the cornerstone of who we are. Sincerely, Ora H. Pescovitz, MD |
